Alyconacea (Soft Corals)
|
Species Canella Gaboensis:
The Canella Gaboensis is a soft coral growing with feathery branches. The polyps feed like those of hard corals using stinging cells to capture tiny animals. |
|
Species Tubastraea Faulkneri:
The Tubastraea faulkneri (Faulkner's Coral) is a type of stony coral that are typically nocturnal but on a cloudy day they will feed during the day. They have polyps of six tentacles that feed on plankton and are a reef building coral. |
|
Species Carijoa Sp. 1:
The Carijoa Sp. 1 is a soft coral species sighted in Sydney at a number of sites. When the polyps feed the coral looks mostly white, like a tree of flowers. When the polyps are closed the coral's orange base is exposed. |
Byrozoa (Moss Animals)
|
Species Steginoporella Chartacea:
The Steginoporella chartacea is a type of Bryozoan, a colony of numerous zooids that remain unattached to the sea bed. They are often brightly coloured and give home to shrimp, crabs and other sea creatures. They form folded colonies with interconnected sheets, where zooids live on both sides. |
|
Species Triphyllozoon Moniliferum:
The Triphyllozoon moniliferum, also known as lace coral, is a type of Bryozoa - a colony of small zoois that form together. They are unattached to the reef. The lace coral zooids form folded perferated lace-like sheets and are often cream in colour. |
Pennatulacea (Sea Pen)
|
Species Cavernularia Obesa:
The Cavernularia obesa is a type of sea pen. This is an animal (not a plant) with a long primary polymp that forms the stalk and secondary polyps arranged in rows for food capture and water pumping. During the day they are hidden under sand but at night they become fully exposed with the polyps resembling feathery branches. |
