Within the Order of Perciformes ('Perch Likes') are some the family of Stripeys (Microcanthidae). This small family of fish only are found in New Zealand and Australia. They are very common in Sydney and can be seen on their own, in large schools, out in the open or hiding in rocky overhangs.
Little is known about this small subtropical family of just five species. Their teeth and scales are similar to the butterflyfishes but they are considered to be of a separate family of fish. The species seen in Sydney include:
