Also known as Sea Robins, the Gurnards are a beautiful fish. There are approximately 120 species within Family Triglidae and in Sydney we sometimes see the Eastern Spiny Gurnard (Lepidotrigla Pleuracanthica) and the Red Gurnard (Chelidonichthys kumu). There are only a few of these species that come into coastal waters since most species are deep water fish so we are very lucky in Sydney to spot these from time to time.
The pectoral fins can be spread like big beautiful wings that they display when trying to startle a predator.
