In Sydney the most common family of Anglerfish seen are those within Family Antennariidae. The Painted Anglerfish (Antennarius pictus) is a cute, small anglerfish with tiny dermal spinules. It can be seen on the sandy floor or on rocks but they are exceedingly well camouflaged and difficult to spot.
These are some of the most colourful and interesting fish that we see in Sydney and divers all get very excited when we see them! They have the widest range of colour of all fishes, and can range from jet black to the brightest of all colours except blue.
