The family Scaridae (Parrotfish) are a tropical family of fish with almost 100 species. This colourful and relatively well known family of fish are rare in Sydney, but the Bluebarred Parrotfish (Scarus ghobban) can inhabit these waters. This family of fish are called Parrotfish on account of their fused jaws which resemble parrot teeth.
The Bluebarred Parrotfish can grow up to 1m in length and is recognisable by its blue bars extending back from its eye and the blue and yellow dorsal fin. The colouration can be different as it grows.
