(Anguilla reinhardtii)
The Longfin Eel (Anguilla reinhardtii) can be seen in various freshwater streams and ponds in Sydney. This species of eel is born in the Coral Sea (for example
New Caledonia / Tonga) and migrates to Australia swimming up rivers/streams to grow. When the eel reaches around 2m in length (which can take more than 20 years) they attempt to migrate back to the Coral Sea to mate which can take 6 months or more. They are a fearless and friendly eel seen regularly in Sydney |
