The family Carangidae (Jacks and Trevallies) are a predominantly silver, pelagic, wide ranging and fast swimming family of fish with over 140 species. This type of fish is carnivorous and feeds on smaller species such as mullet and herring. The largest of this family can reach 2m in length and are often targeted for fishing.
It is known that many species within this family migrate long distances.
The yellow-tail scad are usually seen in large schools in Sydney, sometimes so thick that they block out the sunlight! They seem to attract the Grey Nurse sharks as it can be common that when you see the grey nurse, there are large schools of Yellow-Tail Scad nearby. The Kingfish are a fast species that are dificult to spot as they don't stay still.
