Southern Bobtail Squid
Euprymna tasmanica
Euprymna tasmanica
The Southern Bobtail Squid (Euprymna tasmanica) is very closely related to cuttlefish but does not have a cuttlefish bone, so is in the family of squid. It is tiny at just about 4-6cm in length. These squid can display fantastic colours on account of their symbiotic relationship they have with their bio-luminescent bacteria living inside. They have special light organs that can control the effect of the bio-luminescent bacteria and shimmer amazing colours to help disguise them from the moonlight. These squid can be seen in Sydney harbour close to shore on the sand.
