Narooma (Montague Island), NSW
About 5 hours south of Sydney along the coast is the beautiful town of Narooma. The diving here is so much fun! A short 30minute boat ride away from the town is Montague Island Nature Reserve (also known as Barunguba). With the largest colony of seals in NSW this is not a dive site to miss. There are two main species of seals here on the island, with the large Australian fur seal colony (which are super friendly and playful) and the New Zealand fur seals (quite cute, smaller but typically more shy). There are also penguins on the island but don't get your hopes up about seeing them.
On top of the seals it is common to see wobbegong sharks, port jackson sharks, bull rays and moray eels here.
Typically the visibility here is excellent and I can fully recommend snorkelling, free diving or scuba diving here. Forget about trim and technical diving - just have fun!!! The more you spin, twirl, and act silly the more the seals interact with you!

When you are not diving in Narooma you have plenty of options of places to explore. My favourites include the Bodalla Dairy Shed cheese factory, the boardwalks around Narooma (where you can see seals and bull rays), checking out the kangaroos, wallabies and emus at Potato Point, exploring the pretty beaches of Mystery Bay or just relaxing with a glass of wine at Tilba Valley Winery.
My favourite dive operator in Narooma is Narooma Charters - Norm is a great guy and will ensure you have a great time. |
