The order Beloniformes includes a handful of families, with needlefishes and flying fish being the most common in Sydney.
The family Hemiramphidae (Needlefish) include the species Dussumier's Garfish which can regularly be seen in Sydney (if you look hard enough). They live near the surface of the water feeding on plankton. They are usually seen in numbers rather than travelling alone. I have found them to be very difficult to photograph, on account of their camouflage, speed and timid behaviour. Their camouflage is very good as they are silver in colour, and in addition they are darker on the upper side and lighter on the underside of the body.
