There are many common names to describe the family Plesiopidae of fish. The common names include Devilfish, Hulafish, Longfins, Prettyfins, Roundheads, Dottybacks, Rockfishes and Spiny Basslets.
This family contains around 20 species, two of which we see in Sydney. The two species we see in Sydney are the Eastern Hulafish (Trachinops Taeniatus) and the Eastern Blue Devilfish (Paraplesiops Bleekeri).
The Eastern Blue Devilfish is easily one of my favourite fish - they are colourful, big and whilst they can be shy after a while they can become very curious and will come right up to you. They are often hiding in overhangs and caves and so are easy to miss! Hulafish on the other hand are seen on almost every dive. The Hit and Run Blennies can sometimes be seen in amongst the Hulafish chomping on them bit by bit for dinner!
