Eastern Spiny Gurnard
(Lepidotrigla pleuracanthica)
(Lepidotrigla pleuracanthica)
The Eastern Spiny Gurnard (Lepidotrigla pleuracanthica) of the family Trigliadae (Gurnards) is an exceptional fish. This species has red scales, big blue edged "wings", and its dorsal fin has a big black dot marking. The pectoral fins can be spread like big beautiful wings that they display when trying to startle a predator. This family of fish are typically deep sea fish so to be able to see these fish on a recreational shore dive is what makes Sydney so special.
