Red Rockcod
(Scorpaena cardinalis)
(Scorpaena cardinalis)
The Red Rockcod (Scorpaena cardinalis) is a common medium sized red fish, with fantastic markings and large eyes. They always have a grumpy look on their face but are very cute! They are an ambush predator and can swallow their prey whole. They are a slow growing species, and the large ones are over 30 years old. As a result, whilst they are currently common in Sydney, they are vulnerable to over-exploitation. I hope they continue to flourish as a dive in Sydney would not be the same without coming across one of these gorgeous fish.
